Competitiv­e folk

TASMANIA’S best folk song and tune writers will compete for prizes totalling $800 in Hobart on Saturday night. The Folk Federation of Tasmania invites all entrants to perform their piece at its annual big night, with the audience’s favourite among the awards. It all takes place from 7.30pm at the Wesley Hall in Melville Street, Hobart. Entry is through a $5 donation, BYO food and drink. For more informatio­n phone Peter on 0409 216 752.

Why is it so?

THE 2019 Why Symposium will be launched with a party spread across two North Hobart venues on Saturday. DJ Funk Nukl, Tim Chivers, Celeste and more will be performing at Boodle Beasley, and Shwusu, Chief Get Down, Vibrant Matters and Max Power are among those playing at The Homestead. The Why Symposium launch party will be held at Boodle Beasley from 5-8pm, and at The Homestead from 9pm on Saturday. Entry to Boodle Beasley is free, and entry to The Homestead is $5 at the door.

Ongoing process

THE Folk Process and open mic returns to the Brookfield Shed tonight for the first time since the May floods destroyed the interior of the cafe and live music venue at Margate. Trouvers, Lizzie Donovan and Floyd Taylor will be among the performers, and food will be available. Brookfield reopened last month, and now operates seven days and three nights a week. Tonight’s entertainm­ent starts at 7pm at the Brookfield Shed. Entry is free.

Country sounds

AUSTRALIAN recording artist Anthony Tenace will perform in Glenorchy next week at a concert hosted by the Country Music Club of Southern Tasmania. Tenace, who was introduced to Tasmania in 2015, will sing a wide variety of songs from country music legends and Elvis Presley. Anthony Tenace will perform at the Gold Years Club at Glenorchy from 7.30pm next Thursday (October 25). Tickets are $10 at the door.

Two of a kind

LOCAL duo Out After Two will bring their wide range of pub rock classics and more contempora­ry songs to the Kingston Beach RSL Club tomorrow night. The duo, consisting of Ryan Newell on vocals and Jayden Rowe on acoustic guitar, are performing regular gigs around Hobart. Out After Two play at the Kingston Beach RSL Club tomorrow from 7.30pm. Entry is $5 at the door.
