Rosny beats Buckingham in 31-shot upset

- ROB McGUIRE

BUCKINGHAM failed to maintain the impression that its synthetic green is a fortress after the lowly ranked Rosny Park handed the home side a convincing 31-shot defeat in what was the upset of the round in Bowls Tasmania South’s Premier Division on Saturday.

Rosny Park jumped out to an early lead but Buckingham was within seven shots at the afternoon-tea break. After the break, it was all one-way traffic in favour of Rosny Park. With David Oates playing very well in the lead spot, David Gen- ford handed Alvin Cooke his first loss of the season, winning by 15 shots. Peter Bannister and Michael Taylor had a close game until the break but Bannister played brilliantly and never looked threatened in the final ends, running away to win by 12 shots. Michael Sweeney used some luck and skill to defeat Isaac Maughan by nine shots. Buckingham’s lone winner was Darren Beattie playing against his old club.

Beattie converted a lot of heads to defeat Michael Eiszele by five shots.

Cam Tegg was outstanding and was the difference between the teams when Glenorchy Rodman beat Beltana by two shots. Tegg defeated Scott Summers by 16. Beltana won on the other three rinks, with Paul Williamson beating Tony Vince by seven, Nick Courto beating Luke Turner by six and Shane Young finishing one shot in front of Josh Baker.

Kingborough was too good for Howrah, winning easily by 30 shots. Ryan Guy defeated Chris Chalker by 14 shots. Will Coad beat Dale Maundrill by 11 shots and Jarod Long won by seven over Morgan Williams.

Howrah scored two points, with John McKibben scraping in by two shots over Jason Fowler.

Sandy Bay maintained its position on top of the ladder with a hard-fought 12-shot win over New Norfolk. Keghan Booth defeated Mitch Banks by eight shots, Josh Mabb beat Kerry Hill by four shots and Andrew Norris won a tight battle with David McLean by two shots. Barry Bone was New Norfolk’s only winner, defeating Phil Hobbs by two shots.

Brighton defeated North Hobart by 39 shots.
