Headwind hits spot for Morey

- HOLLY SMEE

WET weather made for trying conditions in Round 7 of Athletics South Interclub competition but it did not prevent a classy performance from Nathan Morey in the men’s 800m.

Sam Field made the early running with a 55sec first lap and looked a winner with 150m to go, but Morey showed superior strength into the wind to pip his training partner on the line, recording a time of 1:55.31 to win by less than half a second.

Harvey Chilcott ran 1:58.95 for third place and a new personal best, to give coach Susan Andrews the trifecta.

The women’s race brought further success for the Andrews squad, with Ella Atkins recording a comfortable win over Ava Faint.

The 3000m events were won by Ben Driessen and Ruby Smee, while Anna Blackwell and David Moore took out the walks.

Jagga Pybus took the 100m and 200m double, in times slightly slower than usual due to a strong headwind.

Caitlin Stalker took out the women’s 100m from Wena Jones in 13.53, with the result reversed in the 200m. Stalker also won the women’s long jump and was second to Sophie Young in the triple jump.

The men’s long jump was taken out by Jacob Nolan, with Josh Glancy leaping 12.54m to win the triple jump.

Huw Peacock’s throw of 62.68m in the hammer was the best of the throw events for the day, along with Indy Brideson’s 31.15m in the women’s 1kg discus. Sandy Bay took out both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay events.
