Joker’s wild about his 20 years on stage

- AMINA McCAULEY

THERE’S a lot to celebrate at The Polish Corner this Wednesday as Joker’s Comedy Club hosts its 185th show.

The club has missed only four shows during its weekly run since opening in 2015. It recently reached a total of about 10,000 punters — and it is Joker’s co-producer Gavin Baskerville who will have the last laugh.

“The real reason we’re celebrating is that it’s my 20- year anniversary in stand-up,” Baskerville said.

To mark the occasion, this Wednesday’s show will feature Melbourne-based comedian Daniel Connell, supported by Baskerville alongside other local talents.

The weekly event, held at New Town’s Polish Corner, has in the past hosted such comedians as Tony Martin, Judith Lucy and Denise Scott, but Baskerville said the club preferred to specialise in presenting comedians who punters might not be so familiar with.

He also said it was the venue which had made Joker’s comedy nights such a success.

“We originally chose The Polish Corner in order to rejuvenate the venue,” he said.

“The layout is perfect for comedy. It’s intimate enough to get the crowd involved but big enough so you’re not stuck in the corner of a pub.”

Tickets for Joker’s Comedy Club’s weekly events can be bought online for $23.30.
