Cyclists hail Huon Rd project, push for more
BICYCLE Network Tasmania has welcomed news that the Hobart City Council will spend $475,000 to widen Huon Rd to make it safer for cyclists.
The group is also pushing for the council to commit to a dedicated cycle network in the Hobart CBD. The Huon Rd works are part of a number of city projects approved in an annual update of the council’s 10year capital works program.
Bicycle Network Tasmania spokeswoman Alison Hetherington said she hoped the widening of Huon Rd works included sealing the edges.
The council was unable to provide details of the Huon Rd works yesterday.
Other approved capital works include $5.6 million to refurbish the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre, with a new two-storey entry building, staircase and lift to accommodate stretchers, large wheel- chairs and prams; an indoor/ outdoor cafe; and new gym change rooms on the first floor.
The aquatic centre redevelopment will cost $22 million and while the council will fund $12 million, it has been unsuccessful in its two funding applications for $10 million from the Federal Government.
