Giving kids the essentials

- AMINA McCAULEY

UNDIES and socks are needed desperately for children of struggling families around Tasmania, with local charity Tassie Mums launching its Everyday Essentials campaign this week.

CEO and founder of the charity Clair Harris said although they don’t struggle with clothing donations, it’s the everyday essential items which are in demand.

“It has really become apparent that we’re just not getting those essential things, we’re not getting new fresh undies and lovely clean socks,” she said.

“It’s the undies, the socks and the singlets that are going to keep you warm heading into those winter months.”

Since September, Ms Harris said they have sent out more than 100 bundles that include clothing, nappies and other items, and the requests are only growing.

The Everyday Essentials campaign asks for people to donate to the schools, day care centres and workplaces around Hobart that have collection points.

The charity is calling for volunteers and for people to hold their own collections to donate at the end of the campaign on April 30.

They are also asking for toiletry items such as toothbrushes, hairbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, hair ties and soap, which are rarely donated.
