Historic discovery
ON a 12-day holiday discovering my heritage it was a privilege to discover the site of a plaque commemorating the presence in Glenorchy and existence in Tasmania of my 5x grandparents, Thomas and Susanna O’Brien. Unfortunately the plaque, at O’Brien’s Bridge, bears the marks of the unintelligent by being vandalised and the remaining tombstone is required to be secured behind locked gates. Fortunately though, the excellent assistance of Glenorchy City Council’s David and Karyn allowed us access to the defunct St Matthew’s Church and they are endeavouring to have the plaque replaced. It is such a relief to know that at least Tasmania really appreciates the heritage of this fantastic country and is prepared to keep it to the fore. Thanks Tassie.
