Captains’ call to give AFLX a go

- CHRIS CAVANAGH

TEAM Flyers’ game plan has been devised over a WhatsApp group while Eddie Betts has promised his side will enter Docklands Stadium “pimped up” tonight as AFLX captains urge fans to give the “fun” tournament a go.

The four teams came together for a light training session at Gosch’s Paddock yesterday, which was little more than a light jog, a few torpedo attempts from long range and kicking around some soccer balls.

With the four teams made up of players from across the league, there is an obvious lack of coaches, but Flyers captain Nat Fyfe said he did not expect that to be an issue come game time given the experience and talent on display.

“We’ve got a WhatsApp group going so all the guys have been chatting and trying to figure out how we’re going to play this game,” Fyfe said yesterday.

“But we spend so much time at our clubs dealing with structure. Hopefully if you get the best players together they just naturally know what they’re doing anyway.”

Team Deadly captain Betts surprisingly said he would be starting himself on the bench in his side’s first match tonight.

“I’m starting on the bench, actually. I’m letting the young guys run around and all I said was go out there, have some fun, kick some goals and try to take some speccies,” he said.

Betts was not going to be benched for costume shopping yesterday afternoon, though, promising his Deadly boys would be looking sharp when they enter the ground. “Make sure you keep an eye on team Deadly because we’re going to be pimped out,” he said.

Bolts captain Patrick Dangerfield urged the football public to give AFLX a go, saying the version of the game was “not for every fan” but would be a lot of fun for those who tuned in or went along.
