Playing just got a lot more fun

GLENORCHY will soon be home to two regionally significant playgrounds thanks to fast-tracked funds from the Federal Government.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has secured $2 million, which will be combined with a further $1.4 million from the Glenorchy City Council for Giblins Reserve, Goodwood and the Montrose Foreshore Community Park.

“It seems like a lot of money, but these will be fabulous facilities, not unlike those at Cornelian Bay or Nutgrove in Sandy Bay, these are destination playgrounds,” Mr Wilkie said.

“This isn’t just about fun. This is about fitness and wellness. We know that every $1 spent on wellness saves about $5 from the health budget down the track.

“So get the kids off their butts, away from the iPads and TV and get them out in the sun and active because this has a long-term dividend.”

Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston said the playgrounds would be regionally significant and without federal funds, they would have been five to 10 years away.

She said they should be complete in 18 months and would include new play equipment, new toilet facilities, improved carparking, barbecues and footpaths.

The Goodwood Community Centre’s Andy Vagg said the improvement of the local playground would be a big boost to the community.

“We’re stuck between the Brooker and the river, which is kind of nice in a way, but this will put us on the map and boost community pride,” he said.
