Male win spoils Schraner’s quest

- ROB McGUIRE

ROSNY Park’s Lee Schraner’s chance of winning the Bowls Australia champion of champion men’s singles championship for three years in a row have been dashed by Kingborough’s Taelyn Male, who defeated him in a thrilling grand final of the Bowls Tasmania South men’s open champion of champion singles championship at Buckingham on Friday night.

Schraner held the upper hand early in the final, jumping out to a nine-shot lead before Male fought back. Schraner was holding the championship shot on two occasions before brilliant bowls from Male denied Schraner the title. Male then scored three shots on the final end to upstage Schraner by one shot.

In the semis, Male defeated New Norfolk’s David Briggs by 11 shots and Schraner beat Dover RSL’s Rick Ormerod.

The Women’s Open championship was won by New Norfolk’s Lyn Triffitt over Buckingham’s Christine Thompson. Triffitt raced to an 11-shot lead and looked to be on the way to an easy win before Thompson recovered and got to within four shots. Triffitt then won five ends in a row to win by 10. In the semis, Triffitt defeated Claremont’s Joy Voss by 14 shots and Thompson beat Howrah’s Denise Tanner by nine.

In the Men’s B grade championships, Buckingham’s Rob McGuire defeated Taroona’s Matthew Featherstone by 11 shots. In the semis, McGuire defeated Howrah’s Lyndon Newell by three shots and Featherstone beat Brighton’s Kevin Booth.

In the Women’s B grade championships, Glenorchy City’s Yvonne Woodward defeated Howrah’s Shirley Calvert by 14 shots. In the semis, Woodward defeated Sandy Bay’s Gail Andersson by 11 shots and Calvert beat Taroona’s Amanda Way by eight shots. THE final round of Premier Division will be held next Saturday with Glenorchy Rodman, Beltana and New Norfolk fighting it out for two available places in the finals.

The game of the round will be Glenorchy Rodman versus New Norfolk. A win to New Norfolk could see reigning premier Glenorchy Rodman bundled out of the top four. Four weeks ago Beltana was sitting on top of the ladder but has lost three games in a row and faces Sandy Bay on Saturday.
