Winter wonders flow in the wet

- HELEN KEMPTON

DON’T put away the wellies and raincoats yet – the rain that fell across Tasmania is set to return later in the week.

Some areas of the North received between 25 and 49mm of rain in the 24 hours to 3pm yesterday.

While there was no damage from the heavy winds, more than 400 residents in the North were without power yesterday afternoon, including those in Blessington, Penguin, Marrawah and Avoca.

Even the dry East Coast received some rain and more is due tomorrow.

One group of travellers not bothered about the weather were Pauline Looney, of Ireland, and Canadians Giancarlo Phillips, AinslieMaria D’Alesio and Darby McFadden.

They packed in some mustsee destinations including Hobart, Wineglass Bay, Cradle Mountain and Mt Field into a four-day Tasmanian trip.

Ms Looney said the cold and rain simply enhanced the beauty of Cradle Mountain and Russell Falls at Mt Field.

“We’ve had an amazing time. My three friends are from Canada so we are used to colder climates,” she said.

Hobart will be cloudy today before rain tomorrow, with showers on Friday and an overcast weekend. Conditions will be similar in Launceston and Burnie. A marine wind warning and a sheep graziers’ alert have been issued for the North and a severe weather warning for the North-East.
