Bailouts have ‘em stumped
THE International Cricket Council won’t modify the stubborn World Cup stumps that have saved five batsmen who should have been bowled.
David Warner is the latest to win a reprieve.
He dragged Indian star Jasprit Bumrah’s second ball on to his stumps only for the bails to stay put.
Australian captain Aaron Finch fears the glitch could cost a team the trophy and Indian counterpart Virat Kohli said the problem was an embarrassment at international level.
“David’s ( ball) hit the stumps pretty hard,” Finch said.
“It does seem to be happening more and more, which is unfortunate, because you’d hate to see something like that happen in a World Cup final or a semi- final or something like that.”
Kohli said four of the five bowlers to be robbed of a wicket were pacemen.
“You literally have to smash the stumps really hard, and I’m saying that as a batsman. And these are fast bowlers ... not your medium- paced bowlers,” he said.
It’s understood the ICC has not changed its stumps or bails since 2015 and the same equipment is used globally.
They won’t be modified mid- tournament as that would alter playing conditions.
All 48 games and 10 teams are required to receive the same treatment.
