Southern supremacy in junior hockey carnival

- ADAM CLIFFORD

SOUTHERN teams dominated the Hockey Tasmania junior intra-state carnival, winning five of the six competitions.

About 340 players across 24 teams competed in under-13, under-15 and under-18 age groups for both boys and girls.

South Green star Alex Hogan-Jones helped his side to the under-18 boys title after a 0-0 grand final display against South Blue, after edging them 2-1 in the round robin match.

“For the majority of the game the South Blue team was on top and had most of possessions, which led to many attacking plays,” Hogan-Jones said. “Our defence was under the pump a lot. We held them out through some great keeping from Jordan Struthers and its just a credit to how the boys came out in the final.

“The game was tough and a real grind until the end but going into the final on top of the ladder meant all the pressure was on South Blue.”

The under-18 girl’s final was a reversal of the boy’s final, with Maddi Brooks starring as South Blue defeated South Green 3-0.

“The final was a well-contested match and the final score didn’t show this, but it was great to play in front of a large crowd,” Brooks said.

North-West took out the under-13 boys title, defeating South Blue 4-2 after a threegoal opening half.

The Premier League returns with round eleven action this Saturday from 1:30pm.
