Biker dies in early morning collision

Mercury (Hobart) - - NEWS - HELEN KEMPTON

A YOUNG motorcyclist was killed as he rode to work in Tasmania’s North-West yesterday morning.

The 24-year-old’s motorbike and a ute collided at Spreyton just before 7am.

Police said the Mitsubishi ute and the Kawasaki motorcycle collided on Kelcey Tier Rd.

The motorcyclist died at the scene and the 59-year-old man driving the other vehicle was taken to Mersey Community Hospital with minor injuries.

Police said speed was not a contributing factor to the crash. They said the rider’s family had been notified.

Inspector Steve Jones said the young man was riding to the conditions.

“The driver is very shaken,” Insp Jones said.

“It was dark but both vehicles had proper lights. It is a tragic situation which has claimed the life of a young man and a reminder to everyone to be observant of all other vehicles on the road.”

Tasmania’s road toll this year is 15, one less than at the same time last year.
