Tapping in to deep potential
TUCKED away under the streets of Hobart is a subterranean exhibition exploring the value that can be extracted from transition and transformation.
For the exhibition, ¢ompo$t, six artists were invited by locally run initiative Constance to create works responding to the idea of “A Forest” for a Dark Mofo exhibition.
Co-curator Lucy Bleach said the
works explored the idea that compost is something with potential.
“Coming to the exhibition you’ll come across a whole range of works,” Bleach said.
“We’re really excited by the project because every work is so different, and there’s a really nice freshness and grit to the work.
“There’s a range of video works, sculptural works, sound works and things in between.”
Brisbane artist Caitlin Franzmann created a piece of work featuring a snake skin in the shape of a circle between a pane of glass.
“The idea of the snake shedding its skin is very much to me about transformation,” Franzmann said.
“In terms of the viewer experiencing the snake, you can see through the paned glass, and that connects to the idea of everything being connected and the view of the work constantly changing as to what’s happening behind it.’’
The ¢ompo$t exhibition is open on Wednesday to Sunday from 2-8pm until June 23 at the Old Hobart Blood Bank and Merchant Store, 51 Liverpool St, Hobart.
