Call for calm on fast-track rezoning

- EMILY BAKER

SPEAKER Sue Hickey has urged calm on the planned fast-tracked rezoning of land at Huntingfield that would ultimately help deliver more affordable housing.

Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania held a forum on Thursday night attended by more than 300 people who were concerned about the State Government’s proposed housing supply land order for 1287 Channel Highway.

Attendees called for answers on what the proposed building of 500 individual lots over 67.69ha would mean for residents, schools, traffic, strategic planning and services and infrastructure in Kingborough.

Ms Hickey, who attended Thursday’s meeting, yesterday pointed out the Government had committed to a master plan, which was still under development. It would consider details like playgrounds, cycle paths and open space.

“Importantly, if this land is rezoned, I have been assured that the proper approval process will go through community consultation and the Kingborough Council approval processes.”

She added: “Whilst I understand the community angst about the traffic and associated infrastructure, I think it is important not to panic until the master plan is completed.”

Tasmanian Council of Social Service chief executive Kym Goodes said if Tasmanians were calling on the Government to address the housing crisis, they must be open to seeing housing growth.

But she said the broader needs of the community still needed to be considered.
