Ban the bikes
IN reply to readers who believe cyclists should have more bike lanes, etc, I invite them to visit Strickland Avenue, no footpaths for most of the way, all uphill, hardly any room to pass with the increasing number of vehicles parked and we have to contend with riders, sometimes in groups who are oblivious to the traffic crawling behind them. I personally say ban the bikes!
Fossil fuel mixed bag
READER Yvonne Stark says Australia is the leading producer of fossil fuels (Letters, September 23). This is wrong. Coal production is led by China at 3523 million metric tonnes a year and Australia is fifth at 481 million tonnes. In oil production Australia is a minnow and doesn’t even
Unresolved in Clarence
WE have a couple of recent examples of councils making poor decisions, not by evil intent but simply due to overlooking good governance or not paying close enough attention to the details of complex negotiations. The proposed Rosny Hill development is another minefield for the unwary. The Clarence City Council already has before them the unresolved issue of Kangaroo Bay, with nothing to show but a fence and many disgruntled residents.
The Rosny Hill development proposal is fraught with even more potential hurdles and headaches, not the least that the terms of the development may not even comply with legislation governing the use of public recreation space. Great care and consideration will be required to ensure a public asset of great worth is not lost.

North-West has it all
IT comes as no real surprise Tasmania’s beautiful North-West Coast has been ranked as the fifth best regional area in Australia to live — on a par with the Sunshine Coast (“Coastal living a lifestyle winner”, Mercury, September 24). The coast also pretty much ticks all the boxes in tourism with pristine beaches, magnificent coastal scenery with great fishing, highly rated golf courses, easy access to Cradle Mountain National Park, Devonport as home port for Spirit of Tasmania ferries and Port Sorell a holiday playground. The North-West pretty much has it all.
Light rail solution
IF government has any comprehension of the importance of the climate change protests which involved so many of our community it should respond by making a start on the Northern Suburbs light rail project. This combines all of the needed elements — it takes polluting traffic off our roads, makes use of existing infrastructure and is powered by clean, green hydro electricity. What don’t they understand?
