Richmond seals sixth Shield win in style

- STUART EATON

RICHMOND Golf Club comfortably secured its sixth victory in the Barclay Shield at North West Bay on Monday.

The team of Dianne Bailey, Pauline Corney, Heather McConnon and Sue Richardson won the team foursomes event with a net score of 148.

“There was a little bit of run, the greens were easier to read and the weather was great. Everything just seemed to align,” Richmond Golf Club’s Sue Richardson said. Richardson believes playing at Richmond Golf Club gives members an advantage when it comes to contesting state events. “Richmond is a smaller, harder course and playing on bigger courses seems easier,” Richardson said. “I also think we’re a tight-knit, close club and we do it for each other.”

Penguin Golf Club finished second on a countback from Tam O’Shanter and Thirlstane Golf Clubs, all of which finished seven strokes adrift of Richmond on 155.

Penguin Golf Club was represented by Lyn White, Julie Stonehouse, Eunice Ray and Colleen Plapp.

North West Bay Golf Club rounded out the top five teams finishing a further stroke back in fifth place on 156.

The day’s best 18-hole nett was presented to Thirlstane Golf Club’s Suzanne Sykes and Liz Sumpton on 73. The Thirlstane pair finished half a stroke in front of North West Bay’s Annie Kruimink and Colleen Thompson on 73½. LYN Mullins from the Moorina Golf Club has been declared the overall winner of the 2019 International Bowl.

The statewide event supports the Women’s Australian Open and as winner, Mullins will be supplied with season passes and associated cocktail and pro-am spots.
