Stunning images put world in focus

-

ORGANISERS of the 2020 Sony Photography Awards have revealed some of the stunning entries as the jury members for this year’s competition are announced.

The event, now on its 13th year, is free to enter and offers an opportunity for photographers around the world to be “seen, appraised and rewarded”.

Entries must be submitted by January 7, 2020 (open competition), and January 14, 2020 (professional competition).

Young photographers aged 12 to 19 will also have more opportunity to be spotted in the youth competition, which will be judged on a single image across 10 categories and chaired by art director Gisela Kayser.

The professional jury will be chaired by picture editor, curator and consultant Mike Trow, who will also curate the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition.

“For the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards I want to ensure we acknowledge those individuals using photography to interrogate the world as it is today,” Trow says.

“Last year’s Photographer of the Year, Federico Borella, captured a global environmental story in such a way that he pushed the boundaries of documentary photography to explore new ground.”

The 2020 jury includes industry experts across the museum, gallery, art fair and media sectors.

Panellists include editor Claudi Carreras Guillen; Touria El Glaoui, the founding director of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair; Katie Hollander, director of the Annenberg Space for Photography; Gwen Lee, director of Singapore International Photography Festival and New York Times photo editor Brent Lewis.

The first of the shortlists will be announced February 4, 2020.
