Canes set to unleash storm

THE Hobart Hurricanes are looking like they’ll create a gale-force this season of the WBBL rather than the gentle breeze of last year.

Only winning two games in the WBBL04, the Hurricanes have already drawn level this season in its first two games of the WBBL05. Playing the Melbourne Stars in back-to-back games at Junction Oval, Hobart were able to record a 20run win on Saturday and a five-wicket victory on Sunday.

Hurricanes coach Salliann Briggs said her side is off to the perfect start and she has been impressed with the team’s new recruits.

“We had six debutants during the games so there were a few nerves around,” Briggs said. “Everyone has fitted in really well, it’s pleasing we have been able to win and perform well but still have some room for improvement in areas.

“They’ve come here because they wanted opportunity, but it’s one thing to get the opportunity, to also perform and have the right behaviours and be able to cope with the pressure is another.”

A major difference for the Hurricanes this season are the additions of pace bowlers Belinda Vakarewa, Tayla Vlaeminck, all-rounder Nicola Carey and leg-spinner Maisy Gibson.

The fab four, along with Hobart’s overseas regular Heather Knight, have bowled all of the side’s overs so far in the tournament.

“The bowling group have been important for us,” Briggs said “Within a Twenty20 squad it is great to be able to only use five bowlers, it means there are people waiting in the wings ready for an opportunity.”

Carey hasn’t just impressed with the ball but has also proven herself with the bat, making a match winning 60 off 46 balls during Sunday’s win.

“Her composure stood out,” Briggs said. “During a time when the opposition starts to gain momentum players can make mistakes and feel the pressure. To be able to stay calm and win with nine balls spare shows Nicola knows her game and having done it for us will give her confidence.”

The Hurricanes next game is at Allan Border Field on Saturday against the Adelaide Strikers who are coming off a win and a loss to the Melbourne Renegades.
