Embiid in groove as 76ers see off Hawks
THE Philadelphia 76ers have continued their unbeaten start to the NBA season with a narrow 105-103 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
Centre Joel Embiid starred for Philadelphia with 36 points — including two clutch free throws with 5.3 seconds remaining — while Australian guard Ben Simmons chimed in with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. The 76ers improved their win-loss record to 3-0 ahead of a home clash against the Minnesota Timberwolves tomorrow.
After Embiid’s late foul shots broke a tie, Atlanta had a chance to win the game, but veteran Vince Carter’s threepoint attempt bounced out off the back rim. Atlanta was led by Trae Young with 25 points, but only six of those came in the second half.
Patty Mills came off the bench to score 12 points as the San Antonio Spurs edged past the Portland Trail Blazers 113-110. DeMar DeRozan topscored for the Spurs with 27 points.
NO WAY: Vince Carter of the Atlanta Hawks knocks the ball loose from 76er Ben Simmons at State Farm Arena in Atlanta yesterday.
