Motorbike rider dies in collision with car
A GROUP of motorcyclists are heading home after their Tasmanian holiday took a tragic turn.
The four friends arrived on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry yesterday morning and headed for Smithton.
Just after 9am their holiday turned to tragedy when one of the riders, a 56-year-old woman from Victoria, was killed after the Harley Davidson she was riding and a black Kia station wagon collided on the Bass Highway near Wynyard.
The three other motorcycles were also involved in the crash.
“The group had just arrived into Devonport this morning and were planning on touring the state,” said Sergeant Craig Harvey, from Wynyard police.
“It was the woman’s first trip to Tasmania and they were travelling to Smithton.”
The Kia was being driven by a 65-year-old man from Queensland.
His passenger and the three other bikers were taken to the North West Regional Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
