Valiant Diver digs deep to take fifth in New York marathon

LATE- BLOOMING Australian Sinead Diver has become the only non-African male or female runner to claim a topfive finish in the 2019 New York marathon. Diver, 42, finished fifth in the women’s race in two hours 26 minutes and 23 seconds yesterday

The Ireland-born runner was among many top-line Australians who chose not to contest the marathon at the recent world championships in Doha due to the oppressive heat and humidity.

In a race contested without pacemakers, Kenyan Joyciline Jepkosgei won the women’s event in New York on her marathon debut in 2:22:38 ahead of countrywoman Mary Keitany.

Diver (pictured) was the first woman across the line from any country other than Kenya or Ethiopia.

Australian Ellie Pashley — who finished a creditable 13th in the 10,000m at the Doha world championships — was ninth in 2:27:27.

Diver was 14th in the 10,000m in Doha, although she is set to target the marathon at next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
