Gotta be Wynett to win it

Wells mare a good bet

- PETER STAPLES

IN-FORM mare Gee Gee Wynett looms as the best bet on the seven-race card at Devonport today.

Gee Gee Wynett is a laststart winner of a benchmark 66 handicap in Launceston at her most recent outing about two weeks ago.

Before that she had great form on the Devonport synthetic with a win and three minor placings before her laststart victory on the turf.

The mare is trained by Dean and Trent Wells at Spreyton, for whom she has won five of 18 starts with eight minor placings helping her to accrue over $82,000 in stakes.

Today she meets a modest line-up in a benchmark 66 handicap (1350m) and as a 762dated galloper she was issued with 61kg by the handicapper but that has been defrayed by 3kg claiming apprentice Peter Lui.

Connections have opted for the claim to get her in at the right weight and given her recent form she should easily account for her opposition.

The in-form Braccenby resumes from a short break and should make his presence felt at the business end of the race but he will still carry 61kg, even with apprentice Scarlet So’s 3kg claim.

Tycoon’s Daughter warrants respect as she was placed in benchmark 72 grade late last campaign and she comes off a reasonable trial at Longford last month.

The Kaye Milne-trained mare will lug 58kg but has drawn gate two and she should enjoy the gun run just behind the leaders. LORD SMEDLEY has the chance to secure his first win this time in when he tackles a benchmark 66 handicap over 1650m (race 6).

The Scott Brunton-trained gelding has been raced sparingly this preparation with a second behind Dothraki Princess in Devonport two starts back his best effort.

He followed up with a fourth of six in Launceston but had no luck in the run and should have finished a lot closer to the winner.

The main danger is Benn Goes Berzerk that won in Devonport three starts back and followed up with minor placings at his two subsequent outings, the latest a third to Toricain in which Lord Smedley finished fourth.

Silent Bid also rates highly as he was impressive in winning in Launceston three weeks ago when successful over Dubai Sky and Kepta in a 0-60 handicap over 1400m.

It would be a surprise if any of the other four runners emerged triumphant.

The first race is scheduled to start at 10.50am with the last at 2.43pm.

The first four races will be broadcast on Sky 1 with the last three races switched to Sky 2.
