Brothers dodge dope conviction
TWO Bridgewater brothers have escaped criminal convictions after being caught growing cannabis using equipment they partly found at the tip.
Jerrod Neil Roach, 24, and Austin Shawn Roach, 20, appeared at the Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday, where they each pleaded guilty to possessing and cultivating cannabis plants and possessing smoking devices.
The court was told police executed a search warrant at the youths’ home on October 1, finding a large hydroponic tent, nine cannabis plants, six lights, two ballasts, a light ballast, a heat mat, grow solution, a set of scales and six smoking devices. The pair was arrested and taken to the Bridgewater police station, where Austin Roach said he had found some of the equipment at the tip and that the pair had grown the plants “for personal use”.
Magistrate Reg Marron decided not to record convictions against the men, given it could affect their future employment prospects. But he said the pair needed to “draw a line” under their activities.
