Pork industry on crisis watch

Mercury (Hobart) - - NEWS -

AUSTRALIA’S pork industry is on high alert to the “catastrophic” African Swine Flu as it draws closer to our shores and drives up domestic red meat prices.

Countries that have had their pork industry decimated by the virus — including Vietnam and South Korea — are importing more Australian beef than ever before, with China leading the charge.

Australian Pork Limited chief executive Margo Andrae said Australia was in a unique situation of being able to prepare for the virus before it hits.
