The Nile: Ancient Egypt’s Great River SBS, 7.35pm English author and historian Bettany Hughes has almost completed her lenthy 1500km journey along Africa’s mighty Nile river. Having started in Cairo, Bettany and her traditional Dahabiya boat have reached the southernmost parts of Egypt. This part of the river was once home to man-eating crocodiles, but today it is unlikely that Bettany will stumble across one of the mighty predators. There is, however, a temple to a crocodile god nearby, and Bettany is keen to join the archaeologists hard at work trying to excavate a giant stone message board from the temple foundations.
