MATILDAS superstar Sam Kerr has dropped her biggest hint yet about where she will play in Europe after listing the FA Cup as a challenge for Australian imports.

The Australian skipper has been heavily linked with several overseas clubs, including Chelsea and six-time Champions League winner Lyon.

However, it appears the former Sydney FC star is destined to take her talents to London.

In Australia preparing for the Matildas’ two-game series against Chile, Kerr is hopeful of revealing her new club within the week.

“It’s nearly there,” she said yesterday. “There’s still a little bit to go through, but it’s an exciting time for me. It’s going to be a new challenge and experience, but I think it’ll only better me as a footballer.

“I’m really looking forward to finally being able to share with everyone because it has been a long process for me.

“It’s been a few years in the making, this decision.”

Kerr said she had sought advice from a handful of Matildas already in Europe, as well as the coaches she spoke to during the interview process.

“It’s just a different world to America or Australia. There’s so many different leagues,” she said. “There’s the FA Cup, there’s the Continental Cup, the Champions League.

“So you’re playing 50 games a year with your club, which is unusual for us Australians.”

After making her WLeague debut more than 10 years ago, Kerr has spent the past six years playing non-stop in both the Australian and in the US summers. Now 26, she is welcoming the thought of playing a single season.

“And I’m getting older, believe it or not. I’m starting to realise that I’m needing that mental break more than anything,” Kerr said.

“So that was a big pull for me to go to Europe.”

While Kerr would become the fifth Australian women’s player to move to Europe this year, she is unsure whether it would be an increasing trend.

“I think the W-League is a great place for people to play when they are finding their feet, getting back from injury,” she said. “But everyone’s so different and everyone has different priorities.”
