Orford too strong in home win

DESPITE winning on only one rink, Orford was too good at home on its synthetic green defeating Howrah by 19 shots in Bowls Tasmania South Women’s Division One pennant, which was played in atrocious wet, cold and windy conditions on Thursday.

Orford’s win was set up by Roslyn Cowle and her rink of Dinah Bennett, Barbara Walker and Margot Clark, who had a convincing 21-shot win over Charon Foster.

Howrah narrowly won on the other two rinks. Rosie Geeves defeated Pauline Sage by one shot after scores were level going into the last end. Sandra Hawksley held a twoshot advantage against Sally Giblin with one end to play. Giblin managed to win the last end but could only score a single shot allowing Hawksley to win by one shot.

Sandy Bay took maximum points in its game against Rosny Park winning by 54.

Yvonne Buckley started off strongly against Ailsa Milburn and continued to dominate throughout the day with some good front-end bowling from Gail Price and Jac Phillips backed up by great bowling from Lynne Barlow and Buckley herself, won won by 23.

With Helen Barnes leading well, Chris Dowl easily defeated Jenny Suttie by 16 shots. Robyn Leggett raced to an 11shot lead after five ends against Gaylene Ridgeway who in turn played good conversion shots on the following four ends to get back into the game. However, with Anne Hinkley and Sonia Martyn playing well in the front end, Leggett went on to win by 15 shots.

Buckingham beat Brighton by 14 shots. The win was set up by Janet Rutherford and her rink of Di Jones, Miriam Garrett and Maree Evans who accounted for Val Lukasec by 12 shots. Jeanette Lane defeated Sue Grant by three. Brighton won on the other rink.

Playing in the comfort of the Kingboroug­h Indoor Centre, Dover RSL defeated Kingboroug­h by 19. Sharon Delaney and Greta Murray were level after seven ends and scores remained close until Delaney scored five shots on the 16th end, eventually winning by 13. Carol Bannister and Leonie Price had a close game until Bannister scored five shots late in the game winning by 12. The Claremont versus Sorell game was washed out.
