No mortgage arrears fear

Mercury (Hobart) - - BUSINESS -

THE proportion of borrowers falling behind on their mortgages has edged to a decade high but the Reserve Bank says it is not overly fazed by the development.

RBA deputy governor Guy Debelle said arrears remained at a sustainably low 1 per cent against a backdrop of weaker economic conditions and rising unemployment in some areas.

He hoped tighter lending standards and low interest rates would keep a lid on the national figure.
