High temps over par

BLISTERING conditions in the state’s South-East put the little town of Campania on the map yesterday when it posted a record November high of 38.3C — making it hotter than Broome, Darwin and Cairns.

The top temperature was only slightly lower than the all-time November record for Tasmania of 38.5C, which was set at Hobart Airport on November 23, 1966.

The heatwave hit early in the quiet semirural town, 34km north of Hobart, with it reaching 31.5C by 9.30am.

Mates Rob Dobbie, David Richardson and Solo Williams withstood the conditions and hot northwesterly winds during a game on the nearby Colebrook Golf Course.

Mr Williams, who has been a club member for the past 20 years, said it was a “beautiful” day.

“I didn’t realise how good it was until everybody started whingeing about it,” he joked.

“It’s a bit windy and extremely hard to keep the ball in the middle of the fairway.

“I think this is one of the hottest days I’ve ever played in at Colebrook.”

Other parts of the SouthEast also sizzled in the conditions with 37.7C at Hobart Airport and Dunalley, 36.8C in Hobart and 35.7C at Bushy Park.

Hobart equalled its November record maximum temperature at 11.57am — the same high set on November 26, 1937.

The temperature in the city then dropped more than 10C in seven minutes when the wind changed at 12.10pm, and had fallen to 19.5C by 2pm.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Anna Forrest said it was “a little odd” to see temperatures reach the 30s during November.

“November’s average maximum top is 19C so it’s a little early to be seeing temperatures reach this high,” she said.

Conditions will be far more mild today, with showers about the West during the early morning and again later this evening. A morning drizzle is also possible in the North-East, but it’s expected to be fine elsewhere.

West to southwesterly winds will tend northwesterly during the day, with afternoon sea breezes in the East.

Hobart will be partly cloudy with a top of 23C.

Salamanca Market-goers might get a little wet tomorrow, with a medium chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon, before a maximum temperature of 20C.
