Canes keen to play at home

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

THE Hurricanes hit Hobart in what will be a telling two days for the side coming off a historic win over Sydney Sixes.

Hobart beat the Sixes for the first time in its history on Wednesday at North Sydney Oval but will now play the BBL’s top two teams the next two days, and need to win both to stay in the finals hunt.

With four games remaining in the season, the Hurricanes are sitting seventh and are three wins out of the top four.

Hobart face Brisbane Heat tonight and the Adelaide Strikers tomorrow night at Blundstone Arena and coach Salliann Briggs said her side is looking forward to returning home and playing in Hobart for the first time in the tournament.

“A few of the girls have said how long it has seemed since we have played in Hobart,” Briggs, pictured, said.

“It will be great to get back and play at Blundstone and under lights will make it even better. We know we have to win every game now, we have put ourselves in a tough position. We’ve been in some winnable positions but let them slip.”

The Canes five wicket win over the Sixes ended a sevengame losing streak but the win looked far away when Hobart were 4/20 chasing 135 after Marizanne Kapp’s 3-23.

Enter Nicola Carey, who made 55 not out and supported by captain Corinne Hall (28) and Chloe Tryon (29 not out).

“Nicola came down to get more opportunity with the bat so for her to win the game for us is exactly what we got her for,” Briggs said. “I was really impressed by our captain Corinne, who hit two boundaries off her first two balls when the team was in trouble. For her to keep playing her natural game during a time like that is the type of cricket we want to play.”

Blundstone Arena will host another WBBL game on Sunday when the Adelaide Strikers take on Sydney Thunder.
