Sandy Bay sitting pretty at top of the women’s pennant ladder

SANDY Bay is undefeated on top of the ladder after downing Sorell by 15 shots on a perfect green on a hot, windy day in Bowls Tasmania South Women’s Division One pennant on Thursday.

Robyn Leggett and Janet Cowen had a great battle with Leggett maintaining a small lead until the 16th end when she scored a seven to break the game open eventually winning by 10 shots.

Yvonne Buckley scored six shots on the first end of the game against Faye Gardner. Gardner fought back and trailed by just three shots at the lunch break. With Jacqui Phillips drawing well, Buckley moved away to lead by six shots, eventually winning by three shots.

Chris Dowl led Shirley Hay by a shot at the break but extended that to seven by the 15th end and held off a comeback from Hay to win by two.

Dover RSL moved to second on the ladder with an eight shot win over Rosny Park. Sheryl Phillips got off to a flyer against Ailsa Milburn leading by 14 shots after just nine ends and was not headed, winning by 19 shots. Sharon Delaney and Jenny Tirant had a tight game with nothing between them after 12 ends. Delaney won the next three ends to jump out to a six shot lead and she maintained that to the end.

Gaylene Ridgway secured two pennant points for Rosny Park with a decisive 17 shot win over Carol Bannister. Buckingham was too good for Kingborough winning by 28 shots. June Guy set up the win for Buckingham defeating Vicki Bannister by 18 shots.

Guy scored five shots on the first two ends to start well and was 10 shots in front at lunch. Guy extended that to 19 after 14 ends and went on to win by 18 shots. Jeanette Lane jumped Greta Murray early and was 11 shots in front after nine ends.

The game was fairly tight after that with Lane winning by seven shots. The closest game of the day was between Janet Rutherford and Leonie Price. Scores were level after 19 ends but Rutherford finished strongly to win by three shots.

The other two matches were abandoned due to the hot weather. Claremont was well in front of Orford and Howrah was in control over Brighton when the umpires called both games off.
