Lonnie vision for airport of the future

- PATRICK GEE

A MAJOR expansion of Launceston Airport will help it become the tourism gateway to Tasmania says general manager Paul Hodgen.

The business has released its draft master plan for public exhibition, outlining the airport’s priorities for the next eight years and vision for developments over the next 20.

The development will see expanded arrival and departure halls, additional gates, extended carparking facilities and improved accommodation.

Mr Hodgen said the annual number of passengers through the airport is expected to increase by 500,000 to 1.9 million by 2028 and up to 2.5 million by 2040.

“We must plan for that growth now through an expansion of our terminal and airfield assets,” Mr Hodgen said.

“As passenger numbers grow we also plan to increase baggage reclaim capacity, and we will add more shopping and dining options to improve the overall traveller experience.

“Our plans will not only enhance the airport, but align with the state’s tourism goals in attracting visitation.”

From next year travellers will see enhanced security screening technology with new regulations allowing passengers to leave laptops in their luggage during screening.

Automated check-in technologies will be explored and are expected to speed up the check-in process into the future. Mr Hodgen said the number of vehicle movements on the airport’s internal road network is set to increase from 6000 today to 10,000 in 2040.

“A forecourt redevelopment and long-term car park and saver car park expansion will be key to cater to the predicted increase in road traffic. We are also working with State Government to facilitate better access to the airport itself.”

The airport plans to decommission two unused grass runways to improve airfield safety and reduce the maintenance liability.

The draft master plan is on public exhibition until March 6.
