- ROB McGUIRE

HOWRAH consolidated its position in the top four with a solid 19-shot win over Sorell in Bowls Tasmania South Women’s Division One pennant on Thursday.

Sandra Hawksley raced to a nine-shot lead after three ends against Faye Gardner and eventually won by 13.

Rosie Geeves jumped out to lead by 10 after six ends against Janet Cowen. Very good bowls by Monica Lovell and Cowen helped her reduce the margin to two shots after 16 ends, but with Gaele Mizzen bowling well, Geeves finished strongly to win by nine shots.

Shirley Hay secured two points for Sorell with a hardfought three-shot win over Charon Foster.

Dover RSL defeated Sandy Bay by seven shots. Sheryl Phillips had a tight game against Robyn Leggett with the lead changing numerous times, but Phillips finished strongly to win by seven. Carol Bannister never looked beaten all day against Chris Dowl, winning by five. And Sandy Bay’s Yvonne Buckley defeated Sharon Delaney by five shots.

In the closest game of the day, Claremont beat Buckingham by one shot. Joy Voss lost to Janet Rutherford by two.

With Jan McPherson having a great day, Maree Morgan defeated June Guy by two shots. Scores were level going into the last end, with Morgan scoring two shots on the final end to win by that margin. This made the scores even with Meekie Salter and Jeanette Lane playing their last end.

Salter was three up on the board and as Lane was holding two in the head Salter did not play her last bowl, winning by one shot for an overall oneshot win for Claremont.

Orford was at home to Kingborough and won by 11. Pauline Sage was too good for Sue Mann, winning by eight shots despite Mann’s rink having bowls consistently in the head all day. Roslyn Cowls started slowly against Leonie

Price before Cowle fought back to take the lead on the 11th end, eventually winning by five.

Greta Murray led all day against Audrey Baker but the scores were level going into the final end. This was set up by Dorothy Cupit and Lea Shead, with Murray holding four shots when the skips came to the mat. Baker was unable to convert and Murray won by four.

The Brighton v Rosny Park game was washed out.
