Fears for missing man

GRAVE fears are held for a missing Victorian man who was last seen around the Hobart waterfront early Sunday morning.

Cameras captured Jarrod Davies heading towards Elizabeth St Pier after leaving the Observatory Bar at Franklin Wharf about 1am on Sunday. The 27-year-old, who was visiting the state with his dad, has not been seen since. Sections of the waterfront were taped off yesterday as police divers and detectives looked for clues.

Cameras captured Jarrod Davies heading towards Elizabeth Street Pier after he left the Observatory Bar at Franklin Wharf about 1am on Sunday.

The 27-year-old, who was wearing beige pants, a black T-shirt and red skate shoes, has not been seen since.

Sections of the waterfront were taped off yesterday as police divers, plain-clothed detectives and uniformed officers looked for clues.

The search was suspended overnight and is expected to resume this morning.

“We know from the CCTV footage that he made his way to the vicinity of the Elizabeth Street Pier, but we have no further information and no witnesses have come forward,” Acting Inspector Darren Latham said.

“We are focusing on the most likely area and putting our resources into looking at the water, but over the past 40 hours we’ve made a number of other inquires, like bank and phone checks.”

Mr Davies, of Leongatha in South Gippsland, was visiting Tasmania with his father to undertake a training course and was staying at a hotel in central Hobart.

His mother landed in the state on Sunday night after the alarm was raised over the whereabouts of her son.

Acting Inspector Latham said an “honest conversation” had been held with the family about the likelihood of finding Mr Davies alive. “According to his family it is out of character,” he said. “His father was not with him later in the evening, he was by himself and there’s no indication he met anyone.

“We’re holding out hope that we can find him alive, however, we have grave fears for his safety.”

Mr Davies is described as about 170cm tall with short dark hair, a nose ring and tattoos, including a palm tree on his left forearm.
