CWA store puts out call for keen cooks

THE Lindisfarne branch of the Country Women’s Association has taken an oldfashioned approach in a bid to stay open.

The CWA has posted a note on the door of its Lincoln St store in its quest for new blood because of retirements and sickness.

The note said “closing of the shop is in the wind unless we get help which we do not want to happen”.

CWA Lindisfarne secretary Dinah Moore said shop help is desperately needed. There are currently only 10 members.

“We are after cooks, knitters, veg growers, we don’t want to have to shut down but we need reliable people to do it and this can be a struggle,” Mrs Moore said.

She said new members also bring in some fresh concepts. After 20 years with the CWA Mrs Moore will retire when her term ends in March. President Catherine Dale is also retiring then.

“Another six to eight members is what we need,” she said. “We have been overwhelmed by community support since posting the sign.

“CWA is an icon for what Australian women stand for and I don’t want to see it disappear. I have felt it’s a privilege to help continue this in our community and I hope we can continue.

“The CWA is a great way to get to know your community better and meet the ladies of the community.

“People need to be committed.

“There are three of us who do a lot of the cooking and baking.”

Fellow Eastern Shore woman Rosemarie Baker said she was excited to be a part of a group that united and helped members of the community she lived in.

The CWA shop has been closed for the festive season and reopens on February 15 from 8.30am to noon.

Those interested in becoming members are asked to come in on Saturday.

The branch is one of 36 across the state.
