Deep State SBS, 10.45pm

After a thrilling first season set in the Middle East, the action of this political espionage series moves to Mali for season two, promising to go deeper into the new gold rush – that is the American’s race to beat China to Africa’s natural resources – oil, gas, ore and minerals. Former CIA agent Nathan Miller (Justified star Walton Goggins) is trying to ensure talks between the US government and Mali go smoothly, but the deal is jeopardised when three US special forces operatives and their Malian translator are ambushed and killed. Also stars Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager) and Anastasia Griffith (Damages).

Modern Family SEVEN, 9pm

When the Pritchett clan first burst onto our screens in 2010, their family dynamic seemed so fresh, somehow different from the family sitcoms that had come before. The show told everyday stories about gay couple Cam and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson, pictured, and Eric Stonestreet), showed the softer side of the age and culture gap between Jay and Gloria (Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara) and brought each character beyond the stereotype they were introduced as. After 10 years, it’s time to say goodbye. In tonight’s season premiere, Haley (Sarah Hyland) is determined to raise her twin babies by the book, literally, constantly referring to a text called Your Parents Did Everything Wrong.
