Hill and Saunders shine at state fours titles

NEW Norfolk’s Kerry Hill and Invermay’s Kim Saunders came out on top in the Bowls Tasmania Men’s and Women’s Seniors Fours Championsh­ip which was at Kingboroug­h Bowls Club on Tuesday.

In the men’s championsh­ips, Hill and his rink of Wayne Clark, Anthony Watson and Peter Clark came from behind in the grand final against Barry Bone, Tony Vince, Grant Allford and Wayne Wilcox to win by seven shots. Bone led by three after seven ends before dropping an eight on the next end and never recovered.

In the semi, Hill defeated North Hobart’s Bill Eather by four shots and Bone beat Beltana’s Shane Young by five.

In the women’s championsh­ips, Saunders and her rink of Bev Huett, Helen Sturzaker and Denise Middap were too good for Buckingham’s Pat Zapotocky, Miriam Garrett, Chris Thompson and Lorraine Pulford. Saunders led by five shots after two ends and was always in control of the grand final restrictin­g Zapotocky to just three scoring ends to race away to a 16-shot victory.

In the semis, Saunders defeated Claremont’s Pam Cooper by four shots and Zapotocky beat Buckingham’s Janet Rutherford by five.

A MIXTURE of experience­d and very inexperien­ced Bowls Tasmania South juniors acquitted themselves extremely well in the second round of Bowls Tasmania’s Junior Statewide Challenge involving boys and girls teams from Launceston, the North West Coast and Hobart at Longford on Sunday. Winning six of the eight games played, the southern team turned the tables on Bowls North West who won the first round last month. North West Coast and Hobart will be played in Burnie on Sunday with Bowls Tasmania South hoping to continue where they left off after the first two rounds of the season at Rosny Park last month where it finished on top.

THE 11th Bowls Premier League starts Tuesday at the Moama Bowling Club in southern NSW. Tasmania will be represente­d by Invermay’s Rebecca Van Asch playing for the Adelaide Pioneers and former Rosny Park player, Lee Schraner, playing for Perth Suns.
