Seeking women to inspire next generation of leaders

- ANNIE MCCANN

A TASMANIAN mayor is putting the call out for inspirational women to share their stories with the next generation of female leaders ahead of International Women’s Day.

Glenorchy City Council Mayor Kristie Johnston will launch her Emerging Leaders Club this month to connect local high school students with professional female leaders.

Emily Tapping, 15, will be one of many Montrose Bay High School students attending the meetings. Emily loves music at school and has been in leadership roles since Grade 7 – excelling as student in her final year.

She said she was excited to attend Elizabeth College in 2021, and hoped the Emerging Leaders Club would give her clarity to decide on and pursue a career.

“I’m looking forward to the social element, and to meeting some women leaders to hear how they got to where they are,” she said.

She said she hoped to learn from the trials and triumphs of women before her in guiding her own pursuit of leadership roles into adulthood.

Ald Johnston said she was excited to host regular monthly copresident meetings to support the girls’ professional development. “It is important to me as a female leader in our community that we engage with our younger female generation and provide opportunities,” she said.

She said she was eager to find more women to speak at the monthly meetings and impart their wisdom.

“I am inviting women from our community to put forward their interest in speaking at one of our meetings – share advice, experience and network with these girls around the opportunities available to them as future female leaders of our city.”
