Late goal for Lions secures Cup win

- • DAN THURLEY

THE Kingborough Lions came from behind to beat South Hobart 2-1 in the Summer Cup last night thanks to a brace from Shane Cartwright.

South Hobart was unable to get the win or draw that it required to secure its place in the final despite taking the lead through a stunning Sam Tooze strike.

The lone goal separated the two sides into the break, but South Hobart found itself under pressure early in the second half.

The Lions were rewarded with a goal in the 55th minute as a Chris Downes corner found Cartwright, who nodded home to equalise.

Kingborough continued to ask questions of the South Hobart backline and a handball from substitute Tae Evans gave the Lions a chance to go ahead from the spot.

Despite proving his setpiece ability in his role in the equaliser, Downes was unable to give the Lions the lead. His penalty soared high over the bar as the score remained 1-1.

Kingborough then found itself with another chance to take the lead in the 82nd minute. The South Hobart defence was again caught out from a set-piece as a long ball over the top found Cartwright through on goal. A composed chip over the advancing Chase Webert gave Cartwright his second and secured the 2-1 victory for the Lions.

Kingborough Lions coach Jez Kenth was pleased with his side’s performance but said there is still work to do.

“The performance was good … I think we were on top of them [for] a good 55 or 60 minutes,” Kenth said. “We’re reasonably pleased with where we are now but to be honest there is still work to be done.”
