Robertson in the mix to join pride’s best 22

- GREG DAVIS

BRISBANE senior coach Chris Fagan says young gun Deven Robertson is in the selection mix for Round 1 after being elevated into the Lions squad for tomorrow’s Marsh Community Series pre-season clash with Carlton.

Fagan said up to three places in Brisbane’s best 22 are still up for grabs ahead of the Round 1 meeting with Hawthorn

at the MCG on March 22, and reputations count for nothing at match committee.

Free agent recruit Cameron Ellis-Yolmen has been dropped from the 30-man squad to take on the Blues in Brisbane’s final pre-season hitout, with 18-year-old midfielder Robertson given a shot at a senior debut in Round 1.

Robertson was captain of the victorious WA side at last year’s national under-18 championships, when he also won the Larke Medal as the best player at the carnival.

After being touted as a potential top 10 draft pick at the end of 2019, Robertson was a surprise slider and Brisbane pounced on him with its first selection at the start of the second round. Robertson has made a big impression on Brisbane’s coaches and players, drawing praise for his willingness to speak at team meetings.

Fagan is clearly a fan and said Robertson would not look out of place in senior football this year.

“We are really happy with his progress. You are always trying to learn about your players. We haven’t seen him against opposition yet, so it will be a good chance to have a look at that and see if he can put his hand up for Round 1,’’ Fagan said of Robertson.

“He’s a real competitor.”
