Sport stars backing the rules

PAST and present Tasmanian sporting superstars have joined the chorus of influencers across the globe imploring people to stay home and save lives.

Homegrown cricket, AFL and motorsport talents are among the long list of legends who have recorded video messages about the importance of social distancing and self-isolating this Easter.

Two-time Richmond premiership star Jack Riewoldt said everyone had a role to play in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

“This Easter, make sure we continue to do our part for everyone around the world, for everyone around Australia and — most importantly — for everyone on the Apple Isle,” he said.

“Look after yourselves, enjoy some family time and stay safe by staying home.”

Australian Test Cricket captain Tim Paine had a simple message for the state: “Follow the rules set out by our government”.

“Tasmanians are very resilient people, and together we will pull through this, but first we all have to do our bit to help, and the best way to do that is to stay at home,” Paine said.

“If we do this well in the coming months I’m sure we will receive some positive news and be back closer to living the Tasmanian way of life we all know and love.”

Former V8 Supercar champion and NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose said “the only way to get back to normal is by working together”.

“I, like others, don’t like being told what to do. The thought of not enjoying Easter with friends and family or going to the shack is pretty hard to accept, but it’s really important,” he said. “We’ve got to reduce our movements and social interactions.”
