Fagan says ‘club hub’ plan suits some, but not others

BRISBANE coach Chris Fagan says placing six-team hubs into Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia to reboot the AFL season was worth considering and he wants to be part of the “solution” to get the game back up and running after the coronavirus crisis.

The Lions’ Tasmanian coach believes the hub scenario would work for some and not for others, and all options should be on the table as the AFL works out formats of the competition after the crisis.

“Lots of ideas are being thrown around about what the competition might look like when we get back up and going again,” Fagan said. “We are going to have to be pretty flexible because we don’t know when that is going to be and how much time we will have to play a season.

“All things should be put on the table. No idea is a silly idea at the moment.”

The AFL has not broadly consulted AFL clubs on the reboot solution.

“I’ve got no doubt at some point in time they will talk to us coaches about some of their ideas because I know we are all pretty keen as a coaching group to be part of the solution going forward and to help the game get back on its feet and grow and thrive again,” Fagan said.

“Everything needs to be considered and we will all get to have a chat about it at some point in time.”

Relocating AFL teams and their support crews to other states for up to a month would have its positives and negatives. “It’s OK for the boys who are single and don’t have wives and children to think about,” Fagan said.

“And within your own playing group you’ve got different scenarios and it’s not easy for some players to spend time away from home. I can understand all the options being considered and we need to do out level best to get out 153 games, but I hope families are high on the priority list.”
