CRACKING EASTER RECIPES

Retro recipes are making a comeback this Easter as Taste.com.au editor-in-chief Brodee Myers-Cooke explains

-

Here comes Easter – and just when we need it.

Easter is the No.1 one search term on taste.com.au – up 700 per cent on the same time last week. Maybe it’s because our pantries are finally stocked; perhaps it’s because we’re settling into a new state of normality. It seems we’ve all decided at once Easter’s on the menu – even if it’s not, perhaps, Easter as we usually know it.

In any other year, right now we would be loading up the car with kids and tents. We would be planning our A-game egg hunts.

And we’d certainly be rattling the pans in the kitchen. This Easter, though, there will be no road trips, and far less family calamity. Sure, the Easter table will be smaller, and the egg hunt far less competitive (except for Dad who always wins).

But if there’s one thing we’ve learnt through these challenging times, it’s creativity and resourcefulness. This Easter our big family gatherings will be virtual, and camping will be in the backyard.

But through all this, one thing remains certain – across the country, we’ll be cooking up a storm. Baking has been hugely popular since the start of the coronavirus crisis.

“Easter baking” is currently the fourth most popular search term on taste.com.au, up 138 per cent on the same time last week.

Old-school and classic bakes are the highest trending recipes. Everyone’s excited about retro recipes that remind them of being a kid.

At the same time, because so many people are cooking from their pantries, we’re going back to basics – those simple recipes that use few ingredients but still bring comfort.

People are turning away from extravagant

Easter bakes to simpler recipes with a twist. Taste.com.au’s loaded Caramilk brownies is one of the top Easter recipes at the moment.

Our partners at Coles tell us sales of salmon, pork roast and prawns typically increase in the few days before Easter and expect this to be the case this year.

No matter what, Easter is always about family and breaking bread. So, we have gathered our favourite recipes for an Easter like no other.

Here’s to gratefulness for the ones we love, and amazing food. I think we all deserve it!
