No doubting Thomas’ talent as he narrowly claims championsh­ip

PROSPECT Vale Golf Club’s Ryan Thomas emerged from a quality field of competitor­s to secure the Highland Championsh­ip on Saturday.

The 19-year-old won the Golf Australia-Tasmania men’s order of merit event by a stroke at Bothwell Golf Club.

The Tasmanian men’s team member finished the 18-hole event with a two-under-par total of 68.

Thomas finished one stroke in front of Dylan Backhouse from the Tasmania Golf Club, who shot a one-under-par 69.

Former Victorian Open champion and Royal Hobart Golf Club member, Simon Hawkes, placed third on evenpar 70.

Three golfers, including

Royal Hobart’s Joey Bower, Kingston Beach’s Matthew Glover and local profession­al Christian Rainey all tied for fourth on one-over-par.

Tasmania Golf Club’s Fletcher Ryan took out the B grade division with a round of 84, two strokes in front of Thirlstane Golf Club’s Tiger Nguyen on 86.

Geoff Webb from the Huon Valley Golf Club collected the C grade prize on a countback from Launceston’s Glenn Hindle. Both finished with rounds of 89.

RIVERSIDE Golf Club’s Isaac Roberts took out the Junior Super 6 competitio­n at Ratho Farm Golf Links last week.

The 15-year-old qualified ninth for the match-play rounds and beat Smithton’s Marty Sheehan 1-up and Backhouse 1-up to reach the final.

Tasmania’s Lachlan White overcame Kingston Beach’s Izak Sterling 3&2, Mowbray’s

Jorjah Bailey 1-up and Tasmania’s Eli Monaghan 3&1 to qualify for the final.

Roberts claimed the inaugural crown by defeating White 2&1 in the six-hole final.

THE Southern Country Golf Associatio­n would like to remind all competitor­s that entries for the 2020 Boys and Girls Championsh­ips are open.

The events will be conducted on October 6 and are open to juniors under 18 years of age.

Colebrook Golf Club will host the event, which will be conducted over 18 holes. There will be an entry fee of $20 for all competitor­s.

A nine-hole tournament will also be conducted for beginners at a cost of $10 per entry and no handicap limit will apply.

Country Associatio­n officials also wish to advise all Southern clubs that entries for the 2020 RHL Roberts Memorial Trophy are open.
