Stabbing accused faints in the docks

- AMBER WILSON

A DERWENT Park woman accused of causing grievous bodily harm to her daughterin-law has fainted in the docks of Hobart’s Supreme Court.

Golafrouz Nazari, 54, has pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring her son’s wife on December 4 last year while the trio and Ms Nazari’s daughter were living together in the same house.

During a pre-trial hearing on Thursday, Ms Nazari fainted as the court heard how her husband was killed in front of their family back in their home country of Iran.

But Ms Nazari, who suffers from high blood pressure and was assisted by a Farsi interpreter, declined an ambulance and proceedings continued as normal.

Her daughter-in-law claimed she was wounded to the chest, just in front of her armpit, when Ms Nazari stabbed her with a sharp object during an argument outside their laundry.

Both women were taken to Royal Hobart Hospital.

Ms Nazari’s son told Associate Justice Stephen Holt that on the day in question, he returned home after his wife phoned him.

“I went into the bedroom to see my wife and she was lying on the bed and the carpet was bloody and I was completely shocked,” he told the court.

“I went into the living room and I wanted to ask my mum ‘why did you do this?’ (but) I saw my mum and her face was covered by blood.

“I called an ambulance and took them to hospital.”

Ms Nazari will return to court on October 12 for a mention hearing, during which a trial date will be allocated.
