Gigs set to break city music drought

-

A SERIES of concerts aims to breathe life back into Hobart’s live music scene.

Hosted by St David’s Cathedral, the First Signs of Life gigs across August and September will involve a host of Tasmanian artists performing in what will be some of the first public performances since the start of coronavirus restrictions.

The August 9 concert will feature current and former Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra members and others for a program of chamber music and German lieder featuring Schubert’s brilliant Trout Quintet for piano and strings.

The second concert, a fortnight later, will feature Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes), Thomas Rimes and several other locally based musicians in a musical event conceived by Ritchie.

“This concert series aims to provide a unique musical experience in an outstanding concert venue for the concert-starved Tasmanian public as well as a muchneeded opportunity for local artists to share their talents with the community after the restrictions on concert activities and public gatherings in 2020,” Cathedral director Thomas Rimes said.

“The performers will be drawn from a wide variety of genres across the local performing arts community.”

Mr Rimes said a portion of proceeds from ticket sales would go towards the cathedral’s music ministry with the remainder of sales to be divided among the performers.

Doors open 1.30pm. No reserved seating.

Tickets $25/$20 concession, available from Trybooking: www.trybooking.com/ BKQEI
