MONA PLANS NEXT PHASE
MUSEUM MAPS OUT PROPOSED EXPANSION
PLANS for an expansion of the Museum of Old and New Art have been submitted to the Glenorchy City Council for approval.
The development application provides a glimpse into plans for a new building on the Mona site.
Designed by Melbourne- based Fender Katsalidis Architects, which designed the original museum building, a proposed new section appears to be named the House of Kiefer.
The existing museum already houses a piece by German artist Anselm Kiefer.
The plans show the proposed new building would be located near Ryoji Ikeda’s light installation Spectra and would be connected to other parts of the museum via two tunnels.
Co- CEO Mark Wilsdon told the Mercury Mona “looked forward to sharing more information in due course.”
“Mona has always had a habit of building new things and we’re continuing to look ahead to what might come next,” he said.
Meanwhile, a whisky distillery, cellar door, bar and restaurant have been proposed for heritagelisted site in North Hobart.
The Elizabeth St building is currently vacant, but it was previously an antique furniture shop and was the factory for Coogans furniture for most of the 20th century.
And, the Southern Midlands Council has grand plans for its region and is searching for a developer to build a boutique hotel in the town of Oatlands.
A GLIMPSE into the next phase for Hobart’s acclaimed Museum of Old and New Art has been revealed in recently submitted council documents.
Mona has submitted a development application to the Glenorchy City Council for an “extension to a museum on a heritage listed place”.
Earlier this year, Moorilla Estate/ Mona was listed as a preliminary replacement entry in the Tasmanian Heritage Register as a way of recognising its heritage value “to all Tasmanians”.

“As always, we’ll be working closely with the Glenorchy City Council on the development of this project.”
The architectural drawings were dated from February, approximately one month before the museum closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
It would be the third significant expansion of the hugely popular museum site. In December 2017, the $ 32 million extension known as Pharos opened, which included another restaurant and four works by American artist James Turrell.
This was followed in June 2019 by the $ 27 million Siloam extension, which features a network of underground tunnels and gallery spaces filled with artworks by Alfredo Jaar, Ai Weiwei, Oliver Beer and Christopher Townend.
Mona has said little about a reopening date since a statement by founder David Walsh in June.
Mr Walsh said at the time Mona would not reopen before October, and that a refurbishment was underway to mark the museum’s 10th anniversary.
The Mona website says the museum will be closed until late 2020 “at least”. Faro Bar and restaurant is open however for a series of highly popular dining experiences up until December 20.
Public comment on the current application closes today.
