Filly sends group warning

- PETER STAPLES

PROMISING filly Assaranca staked her claim on the threeyear-old features with an emphatic win in a benchmark 66 handicap over 1400 min Launceston on Wednesday.

Assaranca (NicconiT al lu la) registered her second win by leading throughout and staving off challenges from more experienced rivals.

The Le anne Gaffneytrained filly broke her maiden status on her home track in a 3YO maiden in Devonport over 1150 min September and followed up with an eyecatching third in Launceston and a subsequent fourth at her first try over 1400m, in which she was held up at crucial stages.

But this time jockey Ismail Toker took no chances, urging the filly from the gates to make the most of an inside draw and once in front she set a solid tempo. She was challenged strongly 600 m out but when Toker called on her, she found another gear and forged clear to win by almost

half-a-length from She wearsthe pants with Vivid Dreamer a distant third.

“It’s not easy for these three-year-old fillies to win against the older horses and against such strong opposition ,” Gaffney said.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with her effort and we will now go forward with plans to get her to a Tasmanian Oaks.”

She said Assaranca would most likely have her next stat in the 3YO Trophy over

1400m before taking on the boys in the Tasmanian Guinea sat El wick next month.

She will have her chance to show her staying ability in the Launceston Guineas over 2100 min January.

Gaffney also is pleased

with Newhart’s effort to win first-up in an open handicap in Launceston last Saturday over 1400m.

“Newhart showed us he is back, and bigger and better than last season, and I am really looking forward to him making his way to another Devon port Cup ,” she said.

“He will go to the Golden Mile(1650m) next Friday and then the Sheffield Cup before trying to win another Devonport Cup .”

A Hobart and or Launceston Cup would be a natural progression for the gelded son of Fighting Sun. JOCKEY-TRAINER Siggy Carr enjoyed a big night on Wednesday, booting home two winners and preparing a double.

Carr’s mare Coronation Doris was on her last chance in a maiden over 1100m but with apprentice Codi Jordan up, the Reward For Effort four-year-old rattled home along the rails to land the win.

Carr then partnered her mare Hannah’s Song (Your Song-Tattyam) to an all-theway victory in a benchmark 60 handicap (1200m), scoring by 1½ lengths from Til therewars you($3.70fav).

She closed the meeting with a front-running ride aboard the Stuart Gandytrained mare Gee Gee Lanett in a benchmark 84 handicap over 1200m.

Gee Gee L an etthasw on 10 of her 44 starts and Carr has been aboard eight times.
